A LEVELS

There are many benefits to studying A-Levels. They are traditionally regarded as one of the most popular routes to university and employment. They offer a wide range of subjects allowing you to carry on with subjects that you have enjoyed at GCSE, combining them with exciting new subjects that you will not have studied before.

A-Levels offer you the chance to focus your attention on a smaller number of subjects, building your knowledge and understanding in the areas in which you have proven strengths and strong interest.

When you are thinking about which subjects to study at A-Level, it is worth considering if you are intending to go to university, and if you have a specific subject in mind ,use the internet to research entry requirements to universities and their course entry criteria.

If you are intending to go straight into work after A-Levels, you might like to do some research into the career that interests you. The Connextions website has more information.

The A Level Grid

The A-Level grid allows you to choose subjects that will not clash on the timetable. Students must choose one subject from each grid, remembering that only exceptional students choose four subjects.

For example looking at the A2 grid:
A student wishing to study for an artistic career might choose Textiles from Grid A , 3D Design from Grid B and Fine Art from Grid D .
A student wanting to go into business might choose Maths from Grid A , Business Studies from Grid C and Law from Grid D.

FAQ

What are the number of A-Levels that you are expected to study?

Students usually study three AS Levels in year one and three A2 Levels in year two. Students with an excellent GCSE profile may be permitted to take four AS subjects in the first year.

How do I progress to the second year of an A-Level?

Progression to Year 2 (A2) is not automatic Students would be expected to achieve at least a grade D at AS Level in order to continue into the second year. Please note that we cannot always guarantee that students who have successfully completed an AS course will be able to go onto to study A2 Levels in the same subject in year 2.

What GCSE grades do I need to achieve to undertake an A-Level course?

To succeed on an A-Level programme you will need to achieve A* - C grades in at least five subjects including English Language at grade C or above at GCSE. Most A-Level students have several A* / A / B grades, especially in the subjects they want to study at A-Level. You will need to have passed a minimum of 5 GCSEs at A* - C including English Language at grade C or above.

Short courses should not be included. Some subjects will require specific GCSE subjects and grades AND/OR a Merit or Distinction at Level 2 in a relevant BTEC Diploma (6 units) will be counted as 2 GCSEs.

Students should also have achieved English Language at grade C or above. Some courses will have additional requirements.
